Today, the T-shirt is considered a genderless garment, but in the past it was exclusively a male garment. This transformation took place during the 19th century, thanks to new technologies that allowed the production of a variety of styles, including tight-fitting ones.

However, it was not until the 20th century that the T-shirt became widespread. In 1910, the renowned brand Fruit of the Loom began to market them on a large scale. Later, in the 1930s, T-shirts became a fashion trend among college students, and were later used for sports, relaxation, and even as underwear. During World War II, American troops wore white T-shirts, which helped give the garment a heroic aura. This marked the beginning of its great success.

The success of theT-shirt increased further thanks to emerging Hollywood actors, who wore white models to emphasize the rebellious attitude of their characters. Iconic films such as "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) with James Dean, "The Wild One" (1953) with Marlon Brando and "A Place in the Sun" (1951) with Montgomery Clift eternalized the T-shirt as a symbol of men's fashion. However, it remained an informal garment for a long time, before being accepted also in more elegant contexts.

Over time, theT-shirt discovered its seductive side. In the 1960s, actresses and singers loved to wear it in suggestive versions. It was in the 1970s that the T-shirt finally became a unisex garment. In 1977, actress Jacqueline Bisset caused a sensation in the United States by wearing a white, wet and transparent T-shirt in the film "The Deep".

From that moment on, the T-shirt has undergone a transformation into a high fashion item, becoming the focus of designers' creativity. Brands such as Dior and Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s, and Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Chanel and Calvin Klein in the 1990s have reinterpreted the T-shirt in a unique way. Designers such as Giorgio Armani, Helmut Lang and Nicolas Ghesquière have even adopted it as part of their personal uniform.
